The company receives commissions from buyers and sellers on each order. StubHub was founded in 2000 by Eric Baker and Jeff Fluhr in San Francisco. It was sold to eBay in 2007 for US$310 million. Viagogo, led by Baker, repurchased StubHub in 2020 for approximately US$4 billion, forming Stubhub Holdings, which became a public company in 2025. StubHub has partnerships with professional sports leagues and companies including Major League Baseball and Anschutz Entertainment Group. It was the first company to purchase an advertisement patch on an NBA jersey. The company was a subject of investigations into ticket scalping by the United Kingdom's Competition and Markets Authority.
